Source: Malt 2026 rate barometer, social media managers. The monthly column is my calculation for a light retainer of four working days a month. By city, averages ranged from €375 in Lille to €428 in Paris.
Malt’s data covers France. Rates in other European countries differ, and I haven’t found an equally reliable public source for each one, so treat France as a reference point rather than a Europe-wide average.
That’s why so many small businesses use freelancers: a senior freelancer on a monthly retainer usually costs a fraction of a full-time hire. The full comparison is in freelancer vs agency vs in-house.
| Model | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly | Audits, one-off setups, small fixed tasks | Costs creep if the scope isn’t tight |
| Day rate | Workshops, strategy sprints, content shoot days | Less suited to daily community management |
| Monthly retainer | Ongoing management, posting, engagement, reporting | Make sure deliverables per month are written down |
I work remotely from Lahore and Gujranwala with small and medium businesses in the US and Europe on fixed monthly retainers: $300 (Starter, 2–3 platforms, 12 posts), $500 (Growth, 3–4 platforms, 20 posts + 4 reels) and $1,000 (Performance, all platforms, 30 posts + 8 reels and ad management). Results from that model include Darson Tyres growing from a new page to 86,000+ organic followers and 4M+ monthly organic reach. Full details are on the Hire Me page.
On Upwork, most charge $14–$35 an hour with a median of $20. Across the wider US market, Sprout Social puts the range at $20–$150 an hour depending on experience.
In France, experienced freelance social media managers average €406 a day on Malt, ranging from €256 for 0–2 years’ experience to €445 for 15+ years. European freelancers more often bill by the day than by the hour.
Usually a freelancer. A US social media manager earns $62,500–$95,500 a year in salary, and benefits make up about 30% of total employer compensation costs in US private industry. A small-business freelance retainer typically runs $400–$2,000 a month.
Monthly retainers work best for ongoing management because deliverables and costs are predictable. Hourly suits audits, setups and small one-off tasks.
