Social Media Competitor Analysis: A Simple 5-Step Method

Social media competitor analysis means studying a few similar pages to learn what works in your niche, where they are weak, and what you can do better. You do not need paid tools. A spreadsheet and 90 minutes are enough.

Step 1: Pick three competitors

Choose pages in the same niche, in your city or country, with a similar number of followers. Add one bigger page you would like to be like. Avoid giant brands. Their budget hides what is really working.

Audit your own page first with the Facebook page audit checklist.

Step 2: Record the basics

For each page, write down followers, posts per week, formats they use and their bio. This gives you the baseline.

Step 3: Study their last 15 posts

  • Which three posts got the most reactions? What do they have in common?
  • What is the hook in the first line or first two seconds?
  • What do they ask people to do at the end?
  • How often do they show proof like results or reviews?

Step 4: Check how they treat people

Read the comments. Do they reply? Do customers ask about price and get no answer? Slow replies are the easiest gap to beat.

Step 5: Find your gaps and test them

Make a short list in three columns: what they do well, where they are weak, and what you will try. Pick two ideas, test them for a month, and compare the numbers.

What to copy and what not to copy

Copy the pattern, not the post. If a competitor wins with short videos that show a before and after, the pattern is proof in the first two seconds. Make your own version with your own work. Copying exact content will not help you and can get you in trouble.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Looking only at follower counts. Engagement tells you more.
  • Studying only the biggest page.
  • Collecting data and never testing anything.
