How Often Should a Small Business Post on Social Media? (2026 Data)

Short answer: the typical brand posts about 3–4 times a week on Instagram (3.69), just under 3 times a week on Facebook and about twice a week on TikTok (1.98), according to Rival IQ’s 2026 benchmark report (Rival IQ / Quid). For most small businesses, 3–5 good posts a week on your main platform beats daily posting you can’t sustain.

How often brands post, by platform (2026)

Platform Typical posts per week Per month (approx.)
Instagram 3.69 16

Instagram: the format mix matters more than the total

In Socialinsider’s analysis of 35 million Instagram posts, brands published on average about 8 Reels, 7 images and 5 carousels a month, around 20 posts in total (Socialinsider). But the engagement rates point to a different mix:

Format Posts per month (average brand) Engagement rate
Reels 8 0.52%
Carousels 5 0.55%
Images 7 0.37%

Brands post more single images than carousels, even though carousels engage better. For most accounts, swapping some image posts for carousels is the easiest improvement.

My recommended starting cadence for small businesses

Platform Starting point Why
Instagram 3–5 posts/week (at least 1–2 Reels, 1–2 carousels) plus Stories most days Matches the typical brand’s cadence and the best-performing formats
Facebook 3 posts/week In line with the typical brand. Images and albums get the best reach on Facebook (Socialinsider)
TikTok 2–3 videos/week Consistency matters more than volume
LinkedIn (B2B) 2–4 posts/week Enough to stay visible without tiring your network

These are my recommendations from client work, built around the benchmarks above. They aren’t a published standard.

Consistency beats volume

  • Pick a number you can keep for 90 days. Posting daily for two weeks and then disappearing does more harm than three steady posts a week.
  • Batch your content. Plan and create a month at a time so busy weeks don’t break the schedule.
  • Repurpose. One Reel can become a carousel, a Story series and a Facebook post.
  • Quality check every post. Would your ideal customer stop scrolling for it? If not, skip it.

From my own work

Darson Tyres grew from a new page to 86,000+ organic followers and 4M+ monthly organic reach on a steady weekly content calendar, not a daily posting frenzy. The consistency made the growth possible, and the calendar kept it going when the team was busy.
