Source: WordStream / LocaliQ Facebook Ads Benchmarks 2026, 452 US lead campaigns, April 2025 to June 2026. “Leads per $1,000” is my calculation (1,000 ÷ CPL, rounded).
Industry averages tell you what’s normal. Your own numbers tell you what’s profitable. Use this:
Maximum affordable CPL = average sale value × close rate × the share of revenue you’re willing to spend on marketing
| Example business | Average sale | Close rate | Marketing budget share | Max affordable CPL |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home improvement contractor | $8,000 | 10% | 10% | $80 |
| Dental clinic (new patient) | $1,200 | 30% | 15% | $54 |
| Online course | $300 | 5% | 30% | $4.50 |
The contractor can comfortably pay more than the $42.95 home improvement average. The online course business can’t afford even the cheapest industry’s average, so it needs a cheaper lead source such as a low-friction free resource, or a much better conversion rate. These are illustrative numbers. Plug in your own.
While leading digital at Darson Industries, my team’s campaigns generated 1,000+ qualified leads across its brands. The biggest improvements rarely came from new audiences. They came from tightening the form, sharpening the offer and replacing creative that had stopped working. On the paid e-commerce side, the same approach delivered a verified 9.28x ROAS for Grand Wazir.
$27.39 across 452 US lead campaigns tracked by LocaliQ between April 2025 and June 2026, with a 2.70% click-through rate, $1.80 cost per click and 8.54% conversion rate.
Career and employment ($12.30), real estate ($13.74) and arts and entertainment ($14.59) had the lowest cost per lead in LocaliQ’s 2026 data. Dentists ($61.56) and beauty ($50.91) had the highest.
A good CPL is one below your maximum affordable CPL: average sale value × close rate × the share of revenue you’ll spend on marketing. Industry averages are a sanity check, not a target.
Enough to reach about 50 leads a week per ad set, which is roughly what Meta says an ad set needs to exit the learning phase. At the $27.39 average CPL, that’s about $1,370 a week. With less, run fewer ad sets or optimize for a cheaper, higher-volume event first.
