Short answer: the average Instagram engagement rate for brands is about 0.48% per post, down 24% year on year, according to Socialinsider’s analysis of 35 million posts (Socialinsider). Rival IQ’s 2026 industry report puts the median even lower, at 0.30%, down from 0.36% (Rival IQ / Quid). Carousels (0.55%) and Reels (0.52%) engage better than single images (0.37%). Why the two numbers differ
Socialinsider reports an average across a very large pool of pages. Rival IQ reports a median from a fixed sample of 150 companies per industry. Medians ignore viral outliers, so they run lower. Use 0.30% as “typical” and 0.48% as “good average”.
Engagement by industry
Rival IQ’s 2026 report found that higher education and sports again had the highest Instagram engagement, while retail and beauty stayed near the bottom. The gap is usually about the audience: fans and students engage with content about something they identify with, while shoppers mostly scroll past product posts. If you’re in retail or beauty, a rate below 0.30% isn’t automatically a problem.
Reach matters as much as engagement
Engagement rate is usually measured against followers, but most followers never see a given post. Socialinsider found the average Instagram post reached 3.20% of an account’s followers in 2026, down 14% year on year, and smaller accounts reach a bigger share (Socialinsider reach study):
| Followers | Instagram reach rate |
|---|---|
| 1K–5K | 6.65% |
| 5K–10K | 5.75% |
| 10K–50K | 5.50% |
| 50K–100K | 4.50% |
| 100K–1M | 3.50% |
How to calculate your own engagement rate
Engagement rate = (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ followers × 100, averaged across your posts for the month. Example: a post with 180 likes, 12 comments, 8 shares and 20 saves on an account with 30,000 followers has an engagement rate of 220 ÷ 30,000 = 0.73%, well above both benchmarks.
Some tools divide by reach instead of followers, which gives much higher numbers. Always check which method a report uses before comparing.
How to raise your engagement rate
- Post more carousels. They had the highest engagement rate in Socialinsider’s data, and saves count heavily.
- Use Reels to reach new people and carousels to deepen engagement with existing followers.
- Open with a hook. The first line of a caption and the first second of a Reel decide whether anyone engages.
- Ask for a specific action. “Save this for your next campaign” or “Which option would you pick?” beats a generic “thoughts?”.
- Reply to every comment in the first hour. Conversation signals relevance and keeps people coming back.
From my own work
At Darson Industries, content built around short-form video and strong hooks produced one organic video with 3.6M+ views and helped grow Darson Tyres from a new page to 86,000+ followers. The lesson that carried over to every client since: one format that fits the audience beats posting everything everywhere.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good Instagram engagement rate in 2026?
Anything above about 0.5% per post is above average for a brand account. Socialinsider’s average is 0.48%, and Rival IQ’s all-industry median is 0.30%.
Which Instagram format gets the most engagement?
Carousels, at 0.55% in Socialinsider’s 2026 benchmarks, just ahead of Reels (0.52%) and well ahead of single images (0.37%).
Why is my Instagram engagement dropping?
Partly because it’s dropping for everyone: average engagement fell 24% year on year and average reach 14%. Beyond that, check whether your content has drifted away from what your audience cares about, and whether you’re using formats that are losing reach.
How do you calculate Instagram engagement rate?
Add likes, comments, shares and saves, divide by your follower count, and multiply by 100. Average it across all posts in a period instead of judging single posts.
